Alpenglow Ascents Rando Challenge- #1

Saturday, March 18, 2017

Come to Arapahoe Basin for a beautiful afternoon of spring-time skinning. This 4th annual spring-time event will start and finish in the Base Area while summiting near 12,472'!

This event is much like our Rise n Shine series, except it’s in the afternoon. Perfect for the serious rando racers that are training for The Traverse or the Power of Four, or people who just want to get a solid skin in at the end of the day. It’s a great time to hang out with your friends who participate in uphill travel, whether they be skiers or splitboarders, recreational athletes or elites. Everyone’s welcome at Alpenglow Ascents!

The event will be begin at 4:30pm and onsite registration starts at 3:30pm in the pass office.

Course Descriptions

Short Course

We’ll start up Wrangler, and then turn up North Fork heading to the East Wall. After a quick diversion up the Snake River Cornice to peek into Marjorie Bowl and Black Mt., we’ll transition to skiing toward the Avalauncher Tower below the East Wall. Next we transition to skin up through Cabin Glade, and then boot pack up a rock gully toward East Wall. Exit the East Wall @ the middle gate and back to skis to skin Lenawee Face and the top of the Zuma Chair. Return to the base area and a beer through Lenawee Parks, across the bottom of the East Wall, to Sundance. This course is approximately 3.5 miles and 1,800 vertical.

Long Course

We’ll start up Wrangler, and then turn up North Fork heading to the East Wall. After a quick diversion up the Snake River Cornice to peek into Marjorie Bowl and Black Mt. we’ll transition to skiing toward the Avalauncher Tower below the East Wall. Next we transition to skin up through Cabin Glade, and then boot pack up a rock gully toward East Wall. Exit the East Wall @ the middle gate and back to skis to skin Lenawee Face and the top of the Zuma Chair. Cut off to ski into Zuma Bowl @ 5:15 PM. Racers will be diverted to the shorter course after this time. Drop into Zuma Bowl via Columbine and Larkspur to the bottom of the lift. Continue to the bottom of the Hike Back area and transition to climbing skins one last time. Ascend through Lightening Trees in technical trees and boulders. Once emerging from the 14er’s Forrest, head for the top of the Zuma chair. The last 200 yards of the ascent on Columbine will require a boot pack due to steep pitch. Now we head for the base area and a beer through Lenawee Parks, across the bottom of the East Wall, to Sundance. This course is approximately 6 miles and 3,000’ vertical. If you don’t think you will complete in less than 1.5 hours, you should consider the shorter course.

Registration is recommended online or you can register.
